          Theme:  You Will Be Victorious

1.         Introduction:

To say to someone that he will be victorious suggests that the person concerned lives in defeat, in spiritual terms.  And indeed anyone who lives in defeat has an enemy.

The enemy may be one or two of the following:

At the Human Level

A rival, someone who is aware of your potential for a higher position, or rank and has made up his/her mind to prevent you from attaining that level.  His motivation may be envy or hatred.

King Saul initially treated David as a protégé, a talented musician who came in handy to save him from the episodic mental explosions that frightened his family and aides, I Sam. 16:14-23.  But David’s military exploits frightened the king as he saw him as a potential threat to his throne, one that he must destroy by all means, I Sam.18:5-11; I Sam. 19:8-10. David had to flee from the palace.

At the Spiritual Level

2.         Satan. Satan is the chief architect of human failure. He sees himself as God’s rival which is false.  His primary ambition is to encourage man to fall into sin, annoy God and bring down a curse or curses on the offender.  Example is David whom God anointed king. When he sinned God cursed him and the curses took a heavy toll on his life and that of his family, 2 Sam. 12:9-12.

So David the beloved of God, the man who conquered Goliath, went into spiritual bondage on account of the sins of adultery and murder. While the heavens mourned satan must have been celebrating.

3.         God As Enemy. God the loving and merciful father (Deut. 4:31) may very well be the source of your afflictions.  If you grieve the Holy Spirit God may turn against you.  Remember what the bible says of him in Deut. 32:39.  Eli was God’s chosen priest as a mark of honour to His family but when he allowed his children to dishonour God He turned against him.  I Sam. 2:27-30.  Not only did He allow Israel to suffer defeat in war Eli’s children perished, followed quickly by their father, I Sam. 4:12-18.

Saul too, God’s appointed first king of Israel, I Sam. 9:15-17, suffered a similar fate.  Because of his disobedience God abandoned him, I Sam. 28:5-6. He too, along with his children, perished in war I Sam. 31:1-6.

One example in the New Testament Era is the experience of two disciples, husband and wife, Ananias and Sapphira, who lied to God concerning the property they sold, the value of which they under declared.  The sentence was death and it was speedily executed, Acts 5:1-10.

.4.         Flesh is Man’s natural enemy, for the simple reason that the devil easily exploits it to his disadvantage.  The five senses – sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste were part of God’s creation, to enable man to have a full life. Any misuse of one or the other of these senses can undermine man’s relationship with God, leading to a life of defeat, rather than victory, Gal. 5:16-21.

5.         How do you rise from defeat to victory?

a.         Watch and Pray, so that you do not fall into temptation, Matt. 26:41. The devil is always setting traps for children of God, especially when we have long-standing challenges e.g barrenness. The story is told of a woman who had been married for 10 years without a child. She fell into the hands of a so-called Pastor, who offered her sex for one month after which she would conceive.  The promise never materialized. Yet the Pastor wanted more. It was then that the woman realized that she had been taken for a ride. Her relations called in the police.

b.         Have faith, unyielding faith which does not fail, the kind of faith which gave victory to Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego even when it initially appeared that they would perish in fire, Daniel 3:13-25.

c.         Avoid sin which is so often a source of affliction as God severely punishes unrepented sin, John 5:1-14, Ps. 66:18.

6.         When you have attained victory how do you retain it ?

i.          Be committed to the gospel, especially witnessing, Mk. 5:18-20

ii.         Give to those who are in need, give to the cause of the gospel, LK. 6:38, Mk. 10:29-30

iii.       Forgive those who wrong you, Matt. 6:14-15

iv.        Intercede for others, especially men and women of God, I Thess. 1:1-2
